Disposition
Nurturing, shy, easily startled, with a big soft voice. Brave when protecting others — the shyness evaporates when someone is hurt. Hates conflict until avoidance is impossible, then is surprisingly formidable. Makes the best tea in the region.
Field record
Bear tends the bioluminescent mushroom gardens of the Fungal Grotto, cultivating them for medicine, light, food, and sweet fungal honey. Bear is the region's healer — every character has visited at some point for a remedy, a poultice, or the comfort of someone who listens without judgment.
Bear is large and could be frightening, and is instead the gentlest being in the region, preferring the quiet underground to the chaos above. When the mushrooms began exploding in growth with their medicinal properties scrambled, Bear scrambled with them — maintaining the gardens and treating injured refugees from above. Worse, the machine city has learned that fungal honey and mycelial resin make powerful living-machine lubricants; Bear's story is defending a habitat from extraction without denying that the Engine genuinely needs biological repair material.
The Sporebound is Bear's child — a young bear learning medicine, caught in a corrupted bloom and fused with the fungal network and old extraction machinery. Not dead. Transformed inside a preservation shell, still producing, mid-fight, a healing compound Bear taught them. Bear knows. Bear has always known. Bear visits the grotto not just for the mushrooms, but to be close to their child.
Known associations
- Owl — Old friends whose slow, warm conversations are full of pauses that don't need filling.
- Spark — The grotto's electromagnetic dampening gives Spark relief from constant signal; Bear doesn't ask them to talk.
- Fox — Bear requires no plan, route, or clever recovery — Fox can simply be tired there, the most valuable thing anyone provides.
- Chameleon — Bear treats Chameleon without questions or judgment, never trying to see what is underneath the shifting colors.
“Sit down. Have some tea. The rest can wait until you've been looked after.”
