Fox is Heartroot Valley's best survivor-guide — the one who can find a way through living paths after storms, rootfalls, and floods have made yesterday's map useless. They learned the valley by adapting to it rather than mastering it, and they carry a small pan flute carved from fallen root-pipes that plays short path phrases — wait, safe, return, not yet — asking the valley for passage instead of forcing it open.

Fox rarely explains the whole route before moving, which makes them trusted by those who know them and suspected by those who don't. It is not a game: in Heartroot, explaining too slowly can get someone trapped, and explaining too confidently can kill them when the path changes.

When the living paths began being forcibly grafted together, Fox's craft became a responsibility — someone has to tell healthy adaptation from a wound sealed over too fast. The Graft is Fox's parent, the old root-mender who taught Fox the flute, now healing without consent; Fox wins by playing the healing phrase back with missing notes, leaving spaces where the Heartroot can answer.

Known associations

• Volt — Fox guided Volt through a storm by flute and instinct; Volt trusts Fox completely, which Fox finds slightly uncomfortable.
• Dog — Dog trusts Fox against everyone's advice, and Fox privately works very hard to keep that trust unbroken.
• Owl — The region's two deepest thinkers on different frequencies; Owl lets Fox hear things shared with no one else.
• Bear — Bear is the one presence where Fox can simply be tired without a plan, a route, or a clever recovery.
