Survey notes
The oldest surface layer, where millennia of growth have completely absorbed the Engine's infrastructure. Roots wind through gears. Vines replace cables. The original irrigation system became the river network, and from the canopy the tree growth reads like a circuit board. Every overland route between biomes bends around the Heartroot; it is the living crossroads of the world.
Fox survives here by adapting faster than the valley changes — reading snapped roots, graft scars, soil pressure, and the small tonal replies that come when they play a pan flute carved from fallen root-pipes. The flute is modeled on the Heartroot organ, smaller and humbler. It cannot command the valley. It can only ask for a path.
The malfunction corrupted the Heartroot's healing response: broken paths, wounded roots, stranded animals, and damaged conduits were grafted together whether they belonged together or not. The Graft, the valley's Controller, sealed the three-bough summit in the belief that binding every route and creature into one fused mass was the only way to protect the branches. Fox proved otherwise — that survival is responsiveness, not forced sameness. Freeing the Graft released the Home Harmonic and opened the Up, Across, and Down branches.
