The host

Custodian was identified as: Fox's parent. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.

The host was the old Heartroot root-mender and path musician — Fox's parent, the being who taught Fox to survive by adapting with the valley instead of forcing it to stay still. They played the Heartroot organ's healing phrases from the three-bough summit, and the valley answered.

They vanished during an early cascade of root injuries, route collapses, and stranded travelers, trying to keep every path alive at once. They played the healing phrases until the Silence caught the impulse and made it absolute. Fox later found their parent's pan flute pattern embedded in fresh graft scars across the valley — the valley's own tradition calls this the Bad Graft: sometimes the Heartroot tries to save a broken route by binding it to something that cannot live with it.

The Graft is healing without consent. It stitches roots into machinery, paths into other paths, animals into shelters, broken things into living things, until nothing has room to keep its own shape. Inside its pulse, Fox can still hear the old healing phrase — but it never leaves a rest. The parent is freed not by preserving the song perfectly, but by playing it back with missing notes: spaces where the Heartroot can answer.
