Volt is the newest member of the Engine Crew, a junior build-and-maintenance drone out of the Foundry. Junior enough to be sent on surface-level repair calls: fixing corroded conduits, resetting tripped relays, clearing root intrusions from access panels. Close enough to fabrication to understand how machines are made, green enough to still be surprised by them.

The crew's specialists are faster, stronger, smarter, and better connected. Volt is none of these. Volt is the generalist — adaptable, curious, and stubborn in the way that matters. When something doesn't make sense, Volt keeps asking why until it does. That quality, not any single skill, is what makes Volt the one who sees the whole picture.

Volt was in the Ancient village on a routine repair when the big malfunction hit, and the conduit on the work order became ground zero. The senior maintenance drone who trained Volt — who taught diagnostics, tool use, and field protocol, and approved Volt's promotion to solo assignments — had already been taken at that same junction. Volt was told the supervisor was reassigned to a deeper zone.

That supervisor is the Regulator now: the mentor's discipline stripped of warmth, enforcing compliance and permitting no questions. When the helmet finally comes off in the Foundry, the face underneath is older, stricter, and familiar — and the protocol voice drops, just for a moment, long enough for Volt to recognize the person inside the enforcement shell.

Known associations

• Hex — Mentor and apprentice — Hex built Volt's first diagnostic kit, and Volt is the one who drags Hex out of theory and into the field.
• Clank — Big sibling energy; Clank is always positioned between Volt and the heaviest hazard, and when Clank does talk, Volt listens carefully.
• Spark — Best friends on the crew — Spark talks, Volt listens, and they were the last two robots in contact when the malfunction scattered the team.
• Cat — Cat was Volt's unofficial village guide and pretended Volt was annoying, but Volt is one of the few beings Cat will openly do favors for.
• Owl — Owl first told Volt the Engine's original purpose in a riddle Volt didn't understand for months — and can't stop thinking about.
