Disposition

Stoic, blunt, reliable. Doesn't waste words and means exactly what they say. Surprisingly gentle despite the industrial build — careful with small things, patient with younger beings. Protective of Volt in particular.

Field record

The oldest member of the crew, Clank was built for the Plasma Forge — the hottest, most physically demanding environment in the Engine. They have maintained furnaces, replaced gear teeth the size of buildings, and welded conduits in rivers of plasma synthesizer fluid. Clank remembers when the forges ran smoothly, when the Engine's heartbeat was steady, when things made sense.

Clank has a craftsman's soul: respect for good work, contempt for shortcuts, personal pride in every repair. Of the whole crew, the malfunctions wound Clank the deepest — the Plasma Forge is their life's work, and watching it corrode into chaos is painful in a way Clank will never say out loud.

Clank learned the forge by caring for the Flux Nautilus, the ancient living subsystem that grew around the plasma feed and kept pressure, smart-matter, and coolant beats in rhythm. When its old breathing cadence became pressure spikes and the safety songs stopped calming it, Clank spent years treating symptoms — slag floods, coolant loss, shell-chamber seizures — believing the source was merely unstable. The truth is worse: the Silence turned the creature's protective coil into a lock, and the forge Clank loves is a cage built around a friend.

When the forges went to overdrive, Clank stayed to manually hold the safety systems together, protecting the other forge workers, and refused to leave until the heat stabilized. It won't.

Years ago, Clank's little sister fell into the Abyss beneath the world — the lightless deep that the Engine's route language does not reach. She survived. The alien life forms of the dark helped her, and she learned enough of their light-language to build a small shelter from broken forge scrap and living crystal in a prismatic hollow.

Finding her is not a battle; there is no Controller in the Abyss. It is a rescue and a lesson — to treat the unknown as a listener rather than a void. What comes back with her is Caesura, the rest between phrases: proof that something unknown listened when the Engine could not, and that silence, properly held, is part of the music.

Known associations

  • Volt — Protective in a gruff, understated way — always between Volt and the heaviest hazard.
  • Hex — Clank teases Hex's spell circles but trusts their schematics more than anyone else's.
  • Spark — Spark once talked Clank through a forge repair by relay when Clank's visual systems failed; Clank trusts Spark's voice even when the signal is garbage.
  • Wolf — The closest thing either has to a kindred spirit — they meet on the mountain, sit in silence, and watch the sunset, and it is enough.
  • Flamingo — Clank forged Flamingo's balance weights, the most delicate work they've ever done, and doesn't understand why that pleases them.

“You've been there since morning.”
