Disposition
Disciplined, precise, competitive. Respects competence and backs up its arrogance about speed. Privately lonely — the altitude and velocity that define them also keep them apart from others.
Field record
Peregrine comes from Cloud Terrace's falcon village, a high-altitude community of scouts, messengers, and storm-watchers carrying warnings, launch manifests, and route news between mountain, sky, machine, and surface zones. Not machine worshippers — sky professionals who know a message delivered in time can save a town.
Peregrine is the region's express courier, the fastest creature in the area by a wide margin; if something must get somewhere urgently, Peregrine carries it. It makes them essential and isolated — always in transit, never settled. Their closest friend in the Floating Machine City is Prairie, a fellow courier whose incomplete testimony in the Mauritius murder case made the mystery personal before it became proof.
As gravity pockets and scrambled storm warnings broke the messenger routes, Peregrine kept flying emergency missions. The Forecast — Chief Forecaster Lanner Sirocco, a Controller wearing a falcon civic persona — had been turning prediction into route control and falsifying storm-chime readings. Peregrine's recognition was a professional's: a wind turn no honest falcon would call safe. The forecast was not wrong. It was authored.
Known associations
- Parrot — The bird rivalry — Parrot envies Peregrine's focus, Peregrine envies Parrot's ability to connect with anyone.
- Bear — One of the few beings Peregrine will delay a schedule for; if Bear says a delivery is urgent, Peregrine drops everything.
- Wolf — Mountain neighbors who read each other's trail marks and flight patterns for warnings, communicating without speaking.
- Woodpecker — Peregrine carries a terrified Woodpecker to inaccessible high towers — and handles the transport with unusual gentleness.
“Adequate. From me, that is practically a compliment.”
