The host

Custodian was identified as: Flamingo's teacher. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.

The host was an enormous old catfish pressure-keeper — Flamingo's teacher, who taught them to read still water from below rather than above. Their barbels could feel Wasteland draw, Farm Town irrigation, and leviathan sleep-pressure as one living rhythm. Flamingo still knows the one mirror-cove where the water no longer reflects correctly.

The teacher was so sensitive to the Engine's pulse that they felt the Silence weakening before anyone else. They tried to rebalance the lake by holding every current steady at once — and the Silence caught that protective instinct and made it absolute. Hollowmere's tradition is quiet about it: the Still Water's Claim takes a watcher who listened too deeply to the current.

The Undertow is a colossal catfish fused with pump cables, valve rings, and barbel-like current anchors. It mistakes stillness for clamping: dragging all water into one bottom current, starving Wasteland recovery, surging Farm Town irrigation in bursts, and sending pressure waves strong enough to wake the leviathan. Its barbel pattern still contains the teacher's lesson rhythm. The way to win is not to overpower the current, but to find the one still beat inside it.

Field notes — combat protocol

A three-stage pressure duel that alternates between invulnerable current control and a body-vent vulnerability window, with the lake's own fish defending the exposed body and a pump shield firing back absorbed damage.
