The host was a young bear learning medicine in the grotto — Bear's child. The grotto holds the most explicit of all the taking traditions: the Garden Claims a Gardener. Bear's community doesn't hide what happens. They mourn, they accept, they tend the garden that grows where the taken one stood.
During a logistics hiccup, the child was exposed to a corrupted mushroom bloom. Instead of getting sick, they fused with the fungal network and old extraction machinery — not dead, but literally transformed inside a mycelial-mechanical preservation shell. Bear knows. Bear has always known. Bear visits the grotto not just for mushrooms, but to be close to their child.
The Sporebound overfeeds and seals — the child's healing knowledge, inverted. It corrupts medicine, turns growth hostile, and converts sweet fungal honey and mycelial resin into machine lubricant at habitat-threatening scale. The same honey is food for bears, medicine for living beings, and lubricant for the Engine, which makes the conflict morally sharp rather than simple. Mid-fight, the Sporebound produces a healing compound — a formula Bear taught the child. The muscle memory of medicine, surfacing through the corruption, proves the grotto can share repair material without being stripped. Field assessors rank this the most devastating Controller encounter on record.
