The host
Custodian was identified as: Wolf's pack leader. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.
The host was the original mountain ranger — Wolf's pack leader, who patrolled before Wolf and taught the old rule: use the trail, not the terminal; protect the animal, not the system. The mountain's tradition, the Watch Eternal, honors the taken ranger as a protector. The wolves do not romanticize it: a ranger's duty is to keep other animals alive, not to serve the machines.
The pack leader didn't vanish suddenly. They changed gradually — more rigid, more territorial, more willing to use forbidden Engine security to keep travelers out 'for their own good.' One day they simply merged with the mountain's security infrastructure. Wolf found the patrol empty and took it over.
The Sentry is protection inverted into exclusion: every route blocked, every traveler marked as a trespasser, machine defenses the wolf rangers were meant to avoid. It still uses the pack leader's trail-marking system — and this is the recognition that breaks Wolf: the marks they've been following for years weren't left by the leader. They ARE the leader.
Field notes — combat protocol
A hunter duel: the Sentry predicts safe standing spots, marks route lanes, and turns old ranger anchors into temporary exclusion zones until the grapple hook breaks its timing.
