Survey notes
A dual-theme mountain that climbs from sunlit switchbacks to a frozen summit. The Engine's thermal exhaust runs up through the peak, venting heat at altitude. The lower trail is patrolled by the wolf rangers, an old animal tradition that avoids technology, distrusts easy machine answers, and protects travelers with weather-reading, trailcraft, and quiet intervention. At the oldest cairn lies the burial place of an ancient wolf being, the mythic founder of the ranger tradition. The wolves mostly refuse to explain whether it is grave or shrine. The point is duty: when machines fail, someone still has to know the mountain.
The summit carries a different load: the Engine's cryogenic storage, a backup archive of frozen specimens, system states, and operational snapshots. The ice is not weather — it is cryogenic leakage, with Engine vents melting warm pockets beside frozen waterfalls. The deeper in you climb, the more you find of the Engine's original operations, frozen mid-function: a snapshot of the world before the Silence.
The malfunction collapses the thermal balance — ice pockets beside hot springs, wind gusts from competing vent systems, archive data replaying as phantom temperature shifts. The mountain gives the Up branch both myth and evidence: a society that protected animals by staying wary of technology, and frozen proof of how abruptly the Engine's multiverse program was shut down.
