The host was Lanner Sirocco, the falcon village's genuine Chief Forecaster — helpful, precise, above suspicion, and above suspicion for good reason. He certified weather for a generation of couriers and never once signed a clear sky he did not believe in. Peregrine flew under his certifications for years and trusted them the way you trust a floor.

He was taken during an early storm season, and the terrace never noticed, because the fragment kept his office, his seal, his handwriting and his manner. The village's tradition for this is thinner than most biomes' — the falcons file disappearances as reassigned to a higher post, and a Chief Forecaster being promoted upward is exactly the sort of thing nobody questions. There was a Lanner to lose. Everyone simply kept talking to what replaced him.

The Forecast is prediction inverted into control. It does not forecast the weather; it forces the weather to match what it already said, because being wrong is the one outcome it cannot survive. Falsified storm-chimes, grounded messages, testimony treated as unsafe weather. Elder Mauritius found the impossible record and was sealed in his own tower before he could send the Last Dispatch, and the village was told he was dead. The break comes when Lanner describes a wind turn no honest falcon would call safe — and Peregrine realises the forecast was not wrong. It was authored. And that the falcon who taught him to read a sky has not been in that office for years.
