The host
Custodian was identified as: Parrot's song-teacher. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.
The host was the elder who taught Parrot the old melodies from before the Silence deepened — the songs that carried news through the canopy. Parents in the Reach still warn children about climbing too high: the Signal's Call reaches backward through the feeder lines, and the Fog's Embrace takes someone who sees too well.
The teacher stopped singing original songs one day and began repeating only: 'The quiet is safe.' They wandered into the deep canopy and were found transformed.
The Echo knows every old song but plays them backward — harmony inverted into dissonance, repeating only the Silence's approved messages endlessly to drown out new information. Beneath the noise, a fragment of the first song the teacher ever taught Parrot survives intact. Parrot frees the teacher by changing that song instead of preserving it perfectly, adding a new verse that turns memory back into living news.
Field notes — combat protocol
An aerial harrier that dive-bombs, broadcasts radial shots, relocates between high perches, and echoes defeated enemies back into the arena as copied sound-images — repetition itself is the threat.
