The host
Custodian was identified as: A hidden-well keeper of Giraffe's monastery. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.
The host was one of the monastery's hidden-well keepers — a monk who knew the dry-season water maps better than anyone alive. The thicket's keepers call the taking the Grove's Claiming, and they see it as becoming part of the forest you served.
After repeated Farm Town clearing attempts, the keeper became convinced that safety required perfect secrecy. They withdrew into the well tunnels to hide every route, every water hollow, every line of sight. Eventually the thicket stopped returning them.
Blackcoil is a giant segmented bamboo snake that makes shelter feel hunted. It crawls underground through hidden wells, coils around massive stalks, throws false heads through lower routes, and weaponizes the thicket's own concealment. It still moves in the old wellkeeper tending pattern. Giraffe recognizes the spacing — not as malice, but as protective secrecy twisted into predation.
Field notes — combat protocol
A giant snake that alternates between bamboo-wrap perches and underground passes behind decoy heads, denying any overview until the scanner cone exposes its true head by location and timing.
