Field summary

Flooded lowland of failed sewer-control ruins; swim-to-root-platform rhythm, a hovercraft chase, and a living basin that resisted mechanization.

Survey notes

The lowland where the Engine's water processing systems surface. Mangroves grew in the output channels and made a half-natural, half-mechanical wetland. Long ago, engineers tried to control the basin with pump houses, drain tunnels, overflow gates, and water-level towers. It failed. Roots split the pipes, tides ignored the schedules, and the basin proved too alive to be managed like a machine. The rusty ruins are part of the ecosystem now, and Frog knows them better than anyone.

Under the malfunction, tidal cycles went haywire. Drains gummed over with black-green sludge, sluice gates opened just enough to tempt a route and then choked shut, and the bioluminescent organisms that feed on Engine runoff turned hyperactive — beautiful, and treacherous to navigate by. The failed control system began behaving as if someone had ordered the basin to obey.

This is the first repair of the Across branch's living circulation. The lesson of the basin is that flow cannot be commanded, only rejoined — through organisms, ruins, pumps, and trade paths. The Clog is what the Silence's idea of order looks like when it is poured into a drain.
