The host was the Spire Queen herself: the last sovereign of Ice Spire before the Silence reached it, and by every surviving account a good one. She kept the launch tower warm, signed off on every departure personally, and read the charge continuity logs herself because she would not send a pod up on someone else's word. The spire's staff called her reign the warm years, which is a strange thing to say about a mountain of ice.

She lost three launches in one season. The spire's tradition records the takings under charge continuity protocol — the same phrase used for the crews — and the Queen filed each of those losses with her own seal. What broke her was not grief but arithmetic: a launch that never happens cannot fail. She stopped signing departures. Then she stopped allowing them. Then she began cooling the tower so that nothing inside it could change state at all.

The Ice Queen did not steal the Launch Harmonic. She redirected it — took the frequency that was meant to lift pods to orbit and spent its entire output on refrigeration, freezing her own tower solid from the inside out. That is the crime and it is a bureaucratic one: a budget line moved from launch to preservation, permanently. She is still in there, still sovereign, ruling a kingdom in which nothing is permitted to happen. Recovering the harmonic thaws the core, aligns the rods, and opens the only viable conduit to orbit. Preservation, in her hands, is just another word for never letting go.
