The host
Custodian was identified as: None. Approach accordingly — the objective is recovery, not destruction.
The Foundry Crane is a stranded cargo-handling machine from the Engine's old works — no host, no fragment, no tragedy but routine. It once hoisted boiler housings, pressure pipes, and horn assemblies through the Steam Maze's maintenance portals.
Now it treats travelers, keys, and loose machinery as obstructions to grab, slam, and feed back into the line. Its ceiling rail has dragged Steam Horn parts and branch keys through the maze for years — which is why Dog can smell the lost artifact but cannot trust any single scent trail.
It guards the Portal branch's key as a cargo-lift lock, and it announces itself with a worker's flat certainty: production line resumes; all obstructions become feedstock. Where the Steam Horn proves release can become song, the Crane is the failed opposite — pressure machinery moving bodies and parts by force.
Field notes — combat protocol
A ceiling-mounted steam-piston crane that glides its rail tracking a player, locks above them with a telegraphed column, plunges to grab and slam, then retracts fully vulnerable — later phases fake the plunge and release forge bombers on retract.
